Disabled Children's Riding Program

The therapeutic effects disabled children receive from horseback riding are far reaching. The horse is an amazing simulator. The three dimensional gait of the horse causes the riders' pelvis, trunk, and shoulder girdle to react in ways very similar to those produced by the normal human walk. You can imagine the benefits of such movement to a wheelchair bound child or one who is to weak or underdeveloped to walk. But, the benefits do not stop there. Children with physical disabilties generally have trouble with balance which causes problems in normal function.

The horse moves the rider from side to side, back and forth, and includes up and down movement. These movements shift the rider; this constant shifting helps develop balance in the rider. Mentally challenged riders are also stimulated to communication and bonding. To the disabled child, physically or mentally challenged, riding horses is stimulating, rewarding, and just plain fun. Self-esteem flourishes, self motivation begins to replace a lack of interest in reaching goals, the outdoors replaces a clinical setting, and children look forward to being with their horses. The Horse - Unconditional Love.
